Digital tonometry is a quick and accurate test for assessing your eye health, diagnosing glaucoma, and monitoring its treatment.
Risk factors for glaucoma
Glaucoma, when the optic nerve that connects the eye to the brain becomes damaged, has several risk factors including:
- family history
- age
- having high blood pressure
- diabetes
- previous eye injuries
What is digital tonometry?
Digital tonometry measures the fluid pressure inside your eye, also known as intraocular pressure.
If you’ve got glaucoma, you’ll have higher intraocular pressure because either the fluid in your eye doesn’t drain as easily or you’re producing too much fluid. Digital tonometry is the most reliable way to diagnose glaucoma, and it’s key to detect it early so treatment can begin before the condition starts to affect your quality of life.
How digital tonometry works
Before the test, your optometrist will give you numbing eye drops to ensure you don’t feel any discomfort.
During the test, gentle pressure is applied to your cornea to flatten it. The more pressure that’s needed, the higher your intraocular pressure.
There are several types of tonometry tests available:
- non-contact tonometry, where your cornea is flattened by a rapid pulse of airÂ
- rebound tonometry, where a lightweight probe gently presses your cornea
- dynamic contour tonometry, which uses a sensor tip that matches the contours of your cornea
Each of these methods is quick and painless. They are all safe and provide accurate measurements of the pressure inside your eye.
The importance of eye health
If you have high intraocular pressure, it’s important to diagnose it quickly. Unless the pressure is extremely high, you won’t be able to feel it yourself, so a test is necessary.
Leaving high pressure untreated for too long can lead to vision impairment and, eventually, sight loss.
Glaucoma develops gradually without noticeable symptoms in the early stages. Digital tonometry enables detection at this time. It also allows us to accurately monitor your treatment plan, to ensure it’s working effectively.
